Tuesday, February 251. Vocabulary List 2
Students received new vocabulary words. We discussed each word and its meaning while students copied down definitions, parts of speech, and root words. 2. TKAM Test Prep Students received the test questions for tomorrow's final test on TKAM. The test is made up of ACE paragraphs. As a class, we went over the ACE format (which has been practiced during class) and the ACE rubric (which is what will be used to grade their tests). Students were then able to spend time planning out responses and collecting evidence to support their responses. HW: PREPARE YOUR INDEX CARD WITH YOUR NOTES FOR TOMORROW'S TEST ON TKAM! Monday, February 241. Finish TKAM Film Analysis
We finished the above film, stopping to discuss. Students also finished their film analysis guides. This will be turned in for a grade on test day (Wednesday). 2. STEAL Method for Characterization Students learned the above method as a way of analyzing characters within a text. Students then chose a character from TKAM and used the method for analysis. 3. Mockingbird Symbolism As a way to follow-up with ending discussions of the book/film, students completed an activity in which they had to identify and analyze one of the mockingbird symbols from the text. As a class, we reviewed some of the plot developments and character points of TKAM that we learned on Friday. 2. TKAM Film Analysis We viewed a portion of the film, analyzing and discussing along the way. 3. Read TKAM Chapter 19 As a class, we read the above chapter of the novel, as a pivotal court scene and plot point for the novel. Together we stopped to discuss, analyze, and predict. Friday, February 141. Rhetoric ACE Paragraph
Students finished an ACE paragraph analyzing purpose and rhetoric from yesterday's TED talk. 2. TKAM Film Analysis Students watched a portion of the film and analyzed elements of the plot, characters, and film techniques. We paused along the way to discuss, and students completed an analysis handout while watching. Thursday, February 131. NOTES- Ethos, Pathos, & Logos
Students received a guided notes handout as we discussed and learned about the rhetorical strategies above. After the notes, we viewed a commercial and analyzed it for its rhetorical appeals (ethos, pathos, logos) and discussed purpose. 2. TED Talk As a class, we viewed a TED Talk in which students filled out guided notes for analyzing rhetoric. Afterwards, students wrote an ACE paragraph about the video, analyzing for purpose and rhetoric. Wednesday, February 121. Vocabulary Quiz 1
Students have five minutes to study before taking the vocabulary quiz for List 1. Students were reminded of format, then took the quiz. 2. Personalization Time After completing the quiz, students took care of individual personalization work. 3. Chapters 2 & 3 Review Students completed a handout reviewing and analyzing yesterday's chapters. 4. Start Film As a class, we began viewing TKAM while students completed a film analysis handout. Students played a review game as a way to help prepare them for tomorrow's vocabulary quiz. Afterwards, we went over the format for the vocabulary quiz. 2. TKAM Reading As a class, we read portions of Chapters 2 and 3 together. We paused often to discuss characters, plot, and motivations of characters. Students continued working on the handout given Thursday (before early dismissal), allowing students to practice with Vocabulary List 1 words. 2. To Kill a Mockingbird Anticipation Guide/Discussion Students rotated in stations (with groups of 3). Each station had an opinion statement on it that connects thematically to the above novel. Students discussed each statement. Afterwards, we came together as a class to discuss. 3. Chapter 1 Students finished off Chapter 1 with the reading questions. Students went to the library for the duration of the class period. For a majority of the time, the media specialists took students through an orientation of the media center and its databases. After the orientation, students checked out our class novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. With the remaining time, they joined our Google Classroom. |
